Betty
bowled everyone over at the Ponderosa Stomp! Held at the Rock 'N Bowl
between the weekends of New Orleans Jazz fest, this festival tracks down
and presents great while often overlooked American music legends. It was a
great place for a comeback show and Betty knocked everyone out singing her
classics like "Cry to Me" as well as great new material like
"Happiness is Mine". She also looked fantastic! |

George Mayweather & Sax Gordon - January 1991 - Harper's Ferry -
Allston, MA

George was the main man around Boston for years. I was so fortunate to get
to know him, and to play and record with him. We used to hop in Eric
"Two Scoops" Moore's van and go from blues jam to blues jam...
George was about the deepest blues singer I ever heard.

What
an honor it was to be on Jack Dupree's records, appearing alongside

never forget this night!

You never know who you'll run into at those wild
Vinyard parties! John Allmark is a fantastic jazz trumpeter and big
band leader out of Providence, RI. That's "society music
mogul" Jerry Bennett smiling in back.

We did one of Howard Tate's comeback shows after he'd been off the scene
for nearly 30 years. He was fabulous. I didn't mind writing 60 pages
of horn arrangements at all!

Gordon & Jimmy Witherspoon - 1990s - the Regattabar - Cambridge, MA
This was a nice gig with the David Maxwell trio backing Jimmy Witherspoon.
Years later when I was touring with Duke Robillard we did a short
tour with Jimmy and recorded the CD "Jimmy Witherspoon with the Duke
Robillard Band" in Vancouver for Stony Plain records. That
would turn out to be his last recording.

Clarence
Hollimon & Sax Gordon - September 1998 - Lakewest Studios - West
Greenwich, RI
This was at the recording session for Jimmy
"T99" Nelson's "Rockin' and Shoutin' the Blues".
Although I only did this session and a few very memorable live shows
with Clarence, he had a big impact on me both musically and personally.
He was a fantastic player and an inspiring person.

Sax Gordon,

"Fuzz" Jones, Bob Margolin, Pinetop Perkins - June 1998 -

In the studio recording Pinetop's Verve/Gitanes CD
"Sweet Black Angel". For some reason it was never released
in the USA, only in Europe. Too bad because it's really a great CD.

Sax Gordon (the Roomful of Blues Horns + Johnny) - 1994 - Canada
I joined Roomful of Blues just in time to go on
tour opening for Colin James and the Little Big Band across Canada. The
horns would also back up Colin during his set. We even opened the
shows for the Rolling Stones on their "Voodoo Lounge" tour in
Canada.

return to The "Night of the Blues" tour in 2003, once again a

Amsterdam, and still managed to get up every morning and make the next
gig! |
