I had the pleasure of presenting Big Jay McNeely with a Lifetime Achievement Award from Boston's Blues Trust Foundation at this show.  I've been fortunate to be able to see Jay over the years but this time I got to open the show and play behind him.  Big Jay's always fun to be around and a great inspiration to me.  Dig that fluorescent sax!

One of the highlights of my career has been playing and recording with the great Jay McShann.

Matt was simply incredible, one of the most amazing musicians I ever worked with. While he was well known for his role in the Blues Brothers movie I don't think he was really recognized for the huge contributions he made to American music.

Sherman is one of the most exciting performers ever!   We've spent many weeks in Paris, France at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Club, as well as making the rounds of festivals in the USA, New Orleans, Memphis, Kalamazoo...

07_1991_w_luther_johnson.jpg (53629 bytes)Sax Gordon, Luther "Guitar Junior" Johnson - February 1991 - Blues Harbor - Atlanta, GA
I spent almost 5 years travelling all over the world with Luther.  Blues Harbor was always a favorite stop.

I worked with Sam when he first came to town, it's great to see the success he's having now.

2003 w/ Melvin SparksMelvin Sparks & Sax Gordon - Aug 23, 2003 - Ryles - Cambridge, MA
photo by Shawn Dos Santos (http://www.myrootdown.com)
I'd worked with Melvin a few times at Rudy Van Gelder's studio outside of NYC on CDs for Jimmy McGriff and Ron Levy.  He's always great and a beautiful, positive guy to be around.  I'd already done two gigs this day but when I stopped on the way home to see him with his own group and he asked me to play a set with him I couldn't resist!  My old friend George Pappageorge sounded great on organ and it was also a pleasure to play with drummer Kenwood Dennard.

My old buddy Two Scoops, his "Big Buffett" is one of the funniest and most popular recordings I've ever worked on.

I've been working on and off with Duke for many years now.  We've travelled all around the world and backed up many great jazz and blues artists both on stage and in the studio.  He's one of the greatest musicians out there and has helped me in so many ways.

A great club in Holland with my friends "Guitar" Raymond Nijenhuis, Hans Molenaar - drums, and Jaap van der Sluijs - bass.   Check them out at www.guitarray.com.

John Hammond is always a joy to work with, and it was always fun to return to my hometown and the Palms Playhouse where I saw so many great shows.  When I was young I used to sit outside but I could hear and see in while Etta James, John Lee Hooker, Robert Cray, Phil Woods, Jerry Jeff Walker and many others did their thing.  I worked with John all over the USA, Europe, even in Turkey!

My horn partner since I joined Roomful of Blues briefly in the late 90s.  We later played together in the Duke Robillard Band, travelled the world and did dozens of recording sessions with great cats like Rosco Gordon, Billy Boy Arnold, Jimmy Nelson, Debbie Davies, Duke Robillard, Colin James, Jerry Portnoy... Now we occasionally co-lead a band when our schedules work out.
